Select The Right Pilates Mat
If you workout in a Pilates studio you may not have to bring your own pilates mat with you as the studio probably supplies workout mats. Working out at home, though, will require that you get a suitable mat. Pilates done on the bare floor is not just uncomfortable, but it can cause injuries.
Don't make the mistake of buying a yoga mat to be used for Pilates. Mats for yoga are thinner and sticky to prevent sliding. Thick padding is not required for yoga and a thin mat will make certain exercises painful.
A good pilates mat is thicker and should be firm to provide support. Get one that is long enough for your body. The roll-up types vary in length from 72 inches to 86 inches and can be as wide as 39 inches. Larger, folding studio type mats can be much larger.
For home use, purchase a good quality roll up pilates mat made of dense foam or rubber. They are readily portable, easy to store and available at most sporting goods stores and online. Regular foam mats can be too soft so I recommend a mat made of closed cell foam or rubber that is thicker and firmer.
If you become more serious about pilates at home, the folding mats, though more expensive, are more like what you will find at a studio. Larger and little heavier, they will give extra comfort and support. Again, stay away from the cheaper versions as they won't be as firm and won't stand up to wear.
You can find good quality folding and rolling mats at Stott Pilates, Peak Pilates and Yoga Pilates Stores. Reebok, Gaiam and Lulu Lemon also market them. A pilates mat or pilates bag makes a great gift idea.
