The Many Types Of Exercise Mats, Choose The Right One For Your Purpose
I started searching a few days ago for a new exercise floor mat for yoga as classes were about to begin for the fall season. My old mat had worn out far too soon as it was a cheaper, plasic type and was becoming rather slippery making it hard to perform and hold certain poses.
I have been taking yoga classes for more than a year now and knew I'd be continuing as it makes a world of difference to my physical and mental well-being. So it is time to put out the money for a quality yoga mat. Mats that are good for yoga seem to have different qualities than those for other sports purposes. I wanted one that would be sticky and supportive as well as long lasting, attractive and easily rolled up for transport. It also had to be long enough for me as I'm above average height.
I looked in a couple of sporting goods stores in the mall but the selection was limited. As I wanted to get the best exercise mat available, at least a much better one than I had, I began searching online just to see what is out there.
Hundreds of websites deal with exercise mats in general and not only yoga, but pilates, sports, stretching, and exercise equipment mats are listed. I also found sites dealing with interocking mats that could provide a padded surface over my entire studio. You will find informative articles here on these sports-related mats in the index on the right.
In my opinion, you are much better off spending a few extra dollars on the right equipment at the beginning of an exercise program. My bad experience with a cheaper yoga mat proves this. This is also true for any type of workout you do involving your body and the floor. Proper cushioning can make the difference between and effective, comfortable workout and painful experience.
It is also true for fitness and exercise equipment that rests on the floor. Having the right mat under your treadmill or other machine will reduce noise and vibration and will protect the floor from damage. You don't want to drop heavy weights on the bare floor any more than you want to hurt your body on a hard floor.
Now I just have to make up my mind among Reebok, Everlast and Airex mats.
